Board of Directors
Our Board is made up of parents and business people passionately interested in education. We are a local, grass roots group, with board members living in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Mebane.
The board of director’s primary responsibilities are:
- Assure the school follows the mission as written in the charter
- Assure financial accountability and financial stability of the school
- Make spending choices and set salaries
- Hire and Evaluate the Director of Education and Curriculum
- Approve all new hires/approve all employee terminations
- Create and revise school and board policies
- Fund raise for the school
The board does not deal with the day to day operations of the school. Day to day items (such as teacher performance, car circle, and school activities) need to be discussed with appropriate school personnel.

Velinda Hatcher (Chapel Hill, NC)
Ms. Hatcher graduated from Tuskegee Institute receiving a Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education. She has taught third through sixth grades in traditional, multi-age, and looping settings for 34 years. She retired in July, 2012, last serving in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District for 28 years.
She is a board member of the non-profit organization Pregnancy Support Services(PSS), a volunteer tutor twice a week, a long standing Sunday School teacher, and a Blue Ribbon Task Force Mentor. Velinda enjoys reading, musicals,scrapbooking, spending time with friends and family, and learning new things.
Ms. Susan Halkiotis has been a long time advocate for strengthening the science and technology curriculum for youngsters in grades K-12. She was a member of the Orange County Board of Education for over eight years, and has served on numerous area task forces and committees charged with improving educational opportunities for students.
She is a graduate of Duke University, where she has been associated with the Center for Neuroengineering and the Department of Neurobiology for 15 years. Susan most enjoys spending her down-time with her family, especially her four young grandsons.
Howard Rhodes (Hillsborough, NC)
Mr. Rhodes is an attorney who serves public and private corporate clients in the areas of civil litigation, corporate law, and real estate. Prior to becoming an attorney, Howard was a professor of religion and philosophy at the University of Iowa and Rutgers University. For three years, he was also an adjunct professor of law, teaching classes on Constitutional law as well as the law of armed conflict. He holds a Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Howard and his wife Aimee have had two daughters at TES since it opened its doors. He happily plays mediocre golf, loves to cycle and swim, and is an avid fan of European soccer.
Christie Norris (Chapel Hill, NC)
Christie Norris serves as the Director of Carolina K-12 at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she designs and facilitates professional development programs for K-12 public school teachers in each of North Carolina’s 100 counties, as well as writes middle and high school curriculum. She previously served as an Education Policy Fellow with the NC Public School Forum and is committed to issues of equity in education, culturally responsive teaching and socio emotional learning. Prior to joining Carolina K-12 in 2006, Christie taught social studies in Durham Public Schools, and previously served as the assistant director of an educational nonprofit in New York City’s PS38. She enjoys serving as a board member and grant writer for TES, and is the parent of a Lego-obsessed 1st grader.
Aaron serves as the COO of Redeye, the country’s leading distributor of independent music and conveniently located in Hillsborough. In this role, Aaron has many years experience running a fast-growing company and has expertise in change management, budgets, corporate structure, acquisitions, and accounting. Prior to Redeye, Aaron attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham and, later, UNC’s Kenan Flagler Business School. Aaron and his wife Ellen have a son at TES in second grade and two more children that will be enrolling in the years to come. Aaron enjoys music, exercise, magic, and living in a completely chaotic world of three crazy kids!
Matt Panning (Hillsborough, NC)
Matt is a chemical engineer who works in the biopharmaceutical field, specializing in manufacturing, capital projects, and process engineering. He works in RTP at Humacyte, a regenerative medicine and tissue engineering company. He was trained at the University of Cincinnati and North Carolina State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. He is passionate about the value of science and education as a tool for the development and enrichment of our lives. Matt and his wife, Amanda, have a daughter in 6th grade at TES, as well as an older son. They are long time residents of Hillsborough, where you can find them on the trails at Occoneechee with their two dogs, or trying to keep up with weeds in their garden.

Meetings are usually scheduled every third Thursday at 6:00 PM. If the third Thursday falls on a holiday, then the board meeting will be the Thursday before.
